Hindu translation

Many people mistakenly ask for a "Hindu translation", because they don't realize that there is no language called "Hindu." The correct name of the predominant language in Northern India is "Hindi" and not "Hindu." An adherent of the Hindu faith is called a "Hindu" and it is true that most adherents of the Hindu faith in Northern India understand Hindi. However, not all Hindus understand Hindi. Adherents of the Hindu faith in South India, particularly, don't find Hindi intelligible. Therefore, there isn't a language intelligible to most or all Hindus or Indians.

Those looking for a "Hindu translation" are perhaps seeking a Hindi translation or Urdu translation. Urdu is a separate language  and Urdu is written in the Persian script.

Those seeking a "Hindu translation" probably require a Hindi translation in the Devanagari or Hindi alphabet.

Hindu translation or a Hindi translation

Some people believe that India's language is "Hindu", because the majority of the Indian populace are adherents of the Hindu faith and hence, ask for "Hindu translation."

Hindi, the correct name for "Hindu", is spoken by more than a third of the Indian population. A "Hindu translation" or Hindi translation can help you reach nearly four-hundred million Hindi speaking people.

If your customers or associates are from Southern, Eastern or Western India, you may need a translation in a different Indian language or different Indian languages.

The Hindus are spread across India and they may speak a language different from Hindi.

Why a "Hindu translation" or a Hindi translation is important?

To linguistically target, Hindi may not be sufficient if you are looking for a "Hindu translation." In addition to the "Hindu translation" or Hindi translation, you may require a translation into a different Indian language or different Indian languages.

You can appreciate the importance of translation in Indian languages, other than a "Hindu translation", by the following indicative number of speakers of each language as per latest Indian Census:

"India's language" Indicative number of speakers
Hindi 337 million
Urdu 250 million
Telugu 100 million
Bengali(Bangla) 69 million
Marathi 62 million
Tamil 53 million
Gujarati(Gujurati/Gujerati) 40 million
Kannada 40 million
Malayalam 30 million
Oriya 28 million
Punjabi 23 million
Assamese 13 million
Konkani 7.5 million
Kashmiri(Koshur) 4.5 million
Dogri 2 million
Bodo(Boro) 1.5 million
Manipuri(Meitei) 1.5 million

"Hindu translation" or "Indian English"

A common misconception prevails that English is widely understood in India. Only about 5% of the Indians are able to comprehend English well and consequently a "Hindu" translation will be required.

English isn't widely understood in the Indian rural areas and Indian speakers of English are usually  perplexed when many English terms common in the UK and the USA are used.

You might, therefore, require an adaptation of your English materials to make them suitable for Indian English speakers apart from getting a "Hindu translation."

Hindu translation and your brand name(s)

Before commissioning a "Hindu translation", it will be wise to have your name checked from the perspective of Indian languages and culture. Some times popular brand names have been found to have unsuitable meanings in Indian languages or offensive to those from Indian or "Hindu" cultures.

Purchasing power is spread throughout the Indian populace and isn't confined to Hindus or those who may understand a "Hindu" translation or Hindi translation.
